How To Freehand Nail Art
Are you a fan of freehand nail art? Intricate and creative, this technique can easily draw a ton of attention to your nails - but can also be slightly tricky to master. For many nail newbies, it can even be somewhat intimidating.

Don’t let yourself be scared off by the challenge! With our handy tips, some practice and plenty of patience, you’ll soon be freehanding nail designs like a pro!

Tip #1: Pick an easy pattern

A novice painter wouldn’t start by trying to paint the Mona Lisa - and similarly, if you’re just getting started with freehand, you should avoid picking any overly daring, complicated designs.

Instead, stick to simple ideas like flowers, polka dots or geometric patterns - then slowly work your way up as your skills improve.

Tip #2: Practice

Before actually starting on your nails, try practicing your chosen design or pattern on a piece of paper first.

Doing this also gives you a chance to test out different ideas and colour combinations - so you can see what works and what doesn’t.

Tip #3: Find a suitable workspace

When doing freehand nail art, it’s especially important to make sure you have a well-lit, comfortable workspace. You’ll need a flat, stable surface for your hand, and a place to rest your other arm or elbow as you work - that way, it won’t shift unexpectedly and cause you to mess up.

Tip #4: Prep your nails before starting

Before you begin, prep your nails by making sure they are clean and oil-free - this will make them easier to work on.

You’ll also want to choose and apply a background colour. White or light colours usually work best, and can really help make your freehand design stand out. (We highly recommend going with Snow White or Drops of Jupiter!)

Tip #5: Draw markers or guidelines

Until you’re more confident in your freehand skills, you’ll probably find it helpful to have a basic guideline to trace and follow.

Before starting, lightly mark the main points of your design on your nail using a toothpick or fine brush. This will make it easier for you to “connect the dots” and put your design together.

Tip #6: Keep doing it the same way

Keep practicing
The secret to beautiful and confident freehand nail art? Forming habits and building muscle memory.

If you always draw something a certain way during practice, then keep doing it the same way once you’re ready to work on your nails. As you keep practicing, it’ll eventually become second nature to you - and you’ll become a lot more confident in your freehand skills.

Remember: practice makes perfect! The idea of doing your nail art freehand might seem challenging at the start - but with time and experience, you will get better at it.
